The Sun City Concert Band evolved out of a dream of eleven musicians to use their
talents to entertain, delight, and inspire their community. In 2003, they performed their first concert for a small group of Sun City residents in the Gallery outside Drendel Hall. From that small beginning, the Band has grown to fifty dedicated and talented members.
They now perform in Drendel Hall with two performances of a Winter/Holiday Concert and two performances of a Spring/Pops Concert.
In order to offer the community a different type of music the club formed a jazz dance band in 2009. Playing the “Big Band” music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and others, the 18-member group named itself “Let’s Dance!” In addition to this great old music, the group performed swing versions of more recent pop hits at dances held in Sun City and numerous locations in nearby communities.
The Band combined with the Huntley High School Band in annual concerts at the High School. Beginning in 2017 the Band has annually performed jointly with 100 Huntley musicians in grades 7-12 at the District 158 All Band Festival held at Heineman Middle School.
In addition the Band has previously performed at various park districts and senior centers in McHenry, Kane and Cook counties where the Band extolled the virtues of Sun City Living.
In 2019 the Band awarded four $700 music scholarships to Huntley High School students. Beginning with the first scholarship in 2010 the Band has now awarded scholarships to a total of 53 students.
Under the artistic direction of Pam Jorgensen, the Sun City Concert Band entertains with a diverse repertoire of compositions from patriotic, big band forties, pop, show tunes, and music in the modern genre. With something for everyone, classic to contemporary, the members of the band have their audience singing, humming, and tapping their toes throughout the performance!
The concert band’s next performance is August 19 (7:00pm) in it’s annual Rock the Ages concert, where the band plays rock n ’ roll hits. Call (847) 961-5905 for information about the concert band.
